A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch. It will protect an electrical circuit from damage. Especially damage that will be caused by any excess current from an overload or short circuit.

It’s Function

The basic function will be to interrupt the current flow after a fault is detected.

Sizes

Circuit breakers will varying sizes, from small devices that will protect low-current circuits or individual household appliances. Right up to large switchgear that will protect high voltage circuits feeding an entire city. Therefore the generic function of a circuit breaker, will be an automatic means of removing power from a faulty system.  Furthermore the fault is often abbreviated as OCPD (Over Current Protection Device).
